In what’s being described as one of the worst illegal dumps in UK history, hundreds of tonnes of waste have been dumped in a field near Kidlington, between the A34 and the River Cherwell. The mountain of waste is over 150m long, 10m wide, and 10–12m high, containing a mix of domestic, commercial, and construction debris. The site sits on a floodplain, prompting fears of river contamination. A major criminal investigation is underway by the Environment Agency.

This case is shocking! Not just for its scale, but for the boldness of dumping on sensitive land. It’s a national wake-up call. Fly-tipping on this scale damages trust in the waste sector. For our clients, it reinforces the importance of choosing a fully licensed, transparent operator who can prove where their waste ends up.
A layby off the A31 near Alton was the site of a hazardous waste dump involving corrugated asbestos sheets and roofing materials. The dump is 8ft high in places, and early estimates suggest a clean-up cost in excess of £18,000.

Nationally, construction and demolition waste (C&D waste) is in the spotlight. Industry leaders, including the CIOB, warn that mounting volumes, regulatory tightening, and client expectations are forcing change, with reuse, recycling, and circular materials becoming standard rather than optional.

We’re seeing this firsthand. Builders and developers are under pressure to reduce waste-to-landfill and prove their environmental performance. L&S supports this with muckaway, grab hire, and responsible C&D waste processing, helping clients stay compliant and efficient.

In a concerning trend, UK exports of plastic waste to developing countries jumped 84% over the past year. Critics argue the UK is failing to build domestic recycling capacity.

While not directly construction-related, this is part of the bigger story: pressure is mounting to prove waste traceability and improve domestic reprocessing. That starts with licensed, local waste handling, something we deliver every day.
