Building a Sustainable Future: Construction Students Embrace Recycling Education with L&S Waste Management L&S Waste Management

Students from CETC Fareham College, accompanied by faculty members, recently embarked on a series of educational site visits to L&S Waste Management’s state of the art recycling facility in Portsmouth. The visits aimed to provide future construction managers with hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of the intricacies of the construction industry recycling process.

CETC Fareham College, home to the Civil Engineering Training Centre (CETC), was established in 2017 to address the pressing skills shortage within the civil engineering sector, particularly in the South of England. Students on the course regularly undertake site visits with companies involved in the local construction industry to gain practical knowledge and insight into this burgeoning industry.

During their visits to L&S, students had the opportunity to experience first-hand the inner workings of a modern, highly efficient, recycling plant and material recovery process in operation. Guided by L&S Waste Management Site Operations Manager, Luke Grainger and Assistant Operations Manager, Jackson Brown, students were provided with demonstrations on how the L&S waste facility will improve waste recovery levels across the region, while at the same time reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill. The students observed the intricate processes involved in waste management, including waste sorting, recycling techniques, and the utilisation of advanced machinery.

Mick Balch, Managing Director of L&S Waste Management, remarked, “Following our recent £1 million investment in our Farlington recycling plant, we now boast some of the most advanced recycling facilities in the South. It was a pleasure to demonstrate this to young construction managers of the future while helping them understand the process of what happens to site waste, what can be recovered, and how best to do it."

Lauren Curle, CETC Centre Manager, expressed her gratitude, saying, “Thank you for taking time out to show the guys around. Super appreciated and I know they really benefitted from it! There was also a lot of excitement and envy about your plant machinery!"

The site visit to L&S Waste Management is an excellent example of industry and academia combining to provide practical, industry-relevant training to aspiring construction professionals, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in the dynamic construction sector.
