L&S Supports Cancer Research with Clear Up L&S Waste Management

L&S has provided waste management services for the Relay for Life Portsmouth event, organised by Cancer Research UK. As part of its L&S in the Community scheme, the firm has donated an 8 yard skip to the organisers free of charge in support of the event.

Relay For Life Portsmouth is a local community event, which has been running for 23 years. It is organised by a volunteer led committee who fundraise throughout the year to stage the event. During the event, teams take it in turns to walk around a track all day and all night to show that cancer never sleeps.

The event has a friendly, festival-like atmosphere that the whole family can enjoy. Camping, music, entertainment and games keep the participants busy when not on the track.

Event organiser, Sian Kilmister said: “Relay For Life Portsmouth would not happen without the energy and enthusiasm of the committee who organise it. Unfortunately, enthusiasm in itself is not enough, we contact local businesses such as L&S to help us keep costs low, as every penny spent on staging the event comes from public donations. The event costs in the region of £6,000 to stage however we do everything we can to keep this cost low. The event in 2018 had over 600 participants, 99 cancer survivors (with the youngest being 6 years old) and raised £95,192 for Research into Cancer. "

“Some of the ‘hidden’ things that go on in the background but which are essential for Relay are items such as PA systems, marquees, generators, skips, and first aid cover. Hosting 600 people for 24 hours unfortunately does result in a fair amount of waste and the venue is unable to cope with this. L&S’ kind donation of a skip, really does help us and keeps our running costs low, hence more money goes towards beating cancer – Thank You."

L&S Waste Management, Managing Director, Mick Balch, said: “Cancer is something that unfortunately reaches every corner of society and many local families, including several of those working here at L&S, have been affected. We are pleased to have been able to help in some small way in the fundraising efforts and we wish the charity all the best for future events."
