What is simpler recycling?

On 21 October 2023, the UK Government introduced the new Simpler Recycling legislation to reform waste collections and recycling across England. This new regulation aims to clear up confusion over recyclable and non-recyclable materials, standardise recycling practices for homes, workplaces, and schools, reduce landfill waste, and tackle illegal waste activities, promoting a more sustainable and environmentally conscious society.

What are the new recycling requirements?

Under the new Simpler Recycling legislation, businesses with 10 employees and more must separate dry recyclables into dedicated containers and ensure food waste is collected separately, regardless of the amount produced, starting from March 2025. Businesses with fewer than 10 employees have time until March 2027 to comply.

Local authorities will also be required to comply with the new Simpler Recycling reforms for waste collected from households from March 2026, providing more consistent recycling and waste collection services, including weekly food waste collections.

LANDFILL TAX & SIMPLER RECYCLING

Following the 2024 Spring Budget announcement, landfill tax rates in England will see a significant rise from April 2025. The standard rate will increase by over 20%, and the lower rate for inert waste will rise by 22.7%. The higher costs are intended to incentivise businesses and local authorities to reduce landfill use and invest in more sustainable waste management solutions.

We will always try and avoid sending waste to landfill but for some treatment residues and residual waste, landfill may be the only available option. By standardising recycling practices and introducing separate collections for food and dry recyclables, the new Simpler Recycling legislation can support businesses and local authorities to more easily divert waste from landfills reducing the volume of waste that incurs the higher landfill tax rates.

FAQs

What is the Simpler Recycling legislation?

Simpler Recycling is a UK government initiative designed to standardise recycling practices for businesses and households. The aim is to make recycling more consistent across the country by requiring separate collection of key waste streams such as dry recyclables and food waste. This helps improve recycling rates and reduce contamination. The legislation places new responsibilities on businesses to manage their waste more effectively.

Who does Simpler Recycling apply to?

Simpler Recycling applies to businesses and non-domestic premises across England. This includes offices, construction sites, retailers, hospitality venues, schools and other organisations that produce waste. Businesses with a certain number of employees are required to comply with the new rules. If your business produces waste, it is likely to be affected by the legislation.

What changes do businesses need to make?

Businesses will need to separate different types of waste rather than disposing of everything in a single container. This typically includes separating dry recyclables such as paper, card, plastics and metals, as well as food waste where applicable. Appropriate containers and collection arrangements must be put in place. The goal is to improve recycling quality and reduce contamination.

When does Simpler Recycling come into effect?

The implementation of Simpler Recycling is being phased, with key requirements coming into effect from 2025 onwards. Deadlines may vary depending on the type and size of the business, so it is important to check when the rules apply to your organisation. Preparing early can help avoid disruption. L&S Waste can help ensure you are ready in time.

What happens if my business does not comply?

Failure to comply with Simpler Recycling requirements could result in enforcement action. This may include warnings, fines or other penalties, depending on the circumstances. Non-compliance can also impact your business's environmental credentials and reputation. Ensuring compliance helps avoid risk and demonstrates responsible waste management.

How can L&S Waste help with Simpler Recycling?

L&S Waste can provide the containers, collections and support needed to meet Simpler Recycling requirements. This may include separate bins for different waste streams, scheduled collections and advice on how to manage waste effectively. The aim is to make compliance as simple and cost-effective as possible. L&S offers a practical solution tailored to your business.

Will Simpler Recycling increase waste management costs?

Costs may change depending on how your current waste management is set up. However, separating waste streams can also create efficiencies and reduce contamination, which may help control costs over time. Using the right provider can help ensure your system is both compliant and cost-effective. L&S Waste can advise on the most efficient approach for your business.

Do I need additional bins or containers?

Yes, most businesses will need additional containers to separate different types of waste. This could include separate bins for dry recyclables, general waste and food waste. The exact requirements will depend on your business activities and waste output. L&S Waste can assess your needs and provide the appropriate containers.

How does Simpler Recycling benefit the environment?

Simpler Recycling helps increase recycling rates and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. By separating materials at source, it improves the quality of recycling and makes it easier to reuse materials. This supports a more sustainable approach to waste management. The legislation is part of a wider effort to reduce environmental impact.
