Simpler Recycling – Change is Coming L&S Waste Management

Landfill in the UK is almost at capacity and as a nation we face a waste crisis if something is not done to proactively change the way we process and manage waste.

That is why the UK government is set to implement the Simpler Recycling legislation, aiming to standardise waste collection and recycling practices across England. This initiative seeks to reduce landfill waste, clarify recycling protocols, and promote environmental sustainability.

Key Requirements of Simpler Recycling

For Businesses with 10 or More Employees: Starting March 2025, these businesses must separate dry recyclables—such as glass, paper, cardboard, metals, and plastics—into designated containers. Additionally, they are required to ensure separate collection of food waste, regardless of the quantity produced.

For Businesses with Fewer than 10 Employees: These smaller enterprises have until March 2027 to comply with the same requirements, providing additional time to adapt to the new regulations.

For Local Authorities: By March 2026, local councils must align with the new standards for household waste collection, including consistent recycling services and weekly food waste collections.

Implementation Timeline

  • By Autumn 2024: The government will release detailed guidance on the specific requirements of the legislation.
  • By 31 March 2025: Mandatory separate collections for dry recyclable materials and food waste will commence for non-household premises with 10 or more employees.
  • By 31 March 2026: Household waste collections will be standardised, including weekly food waste collections.
  • By 31 March 2027: Micro-businesses with fewer than 10 employees must comply with the recycling requirements.

Implications for Businesses

The good news is that this new legislation may actually lead to savings for businesses, as separating waste at source makes it easier for companies like L&S to manage.

Businesses will, however, need to invest in appropriate waste segregation systems and collaborate with waste management providers to ensure compliance. This may involve training staff and adjusting operational procedures.
